The Dixie fire in northern California is on track to become the largest wildfire in state history, officials said.

The fire burned down 917,579 acres, and as of Tuesday it was only 59% localized. Currently, the state's largest fire by area is the August complex, which burned 1,032,648 acres in 2020.

The Dixie Fire began on July 14 and, according to Cal Fire, damaged or destroyed at least 1,282 buildings.

Of the 20 largest forest fires since 1932, 17 have occurred since 2000; 11 - from 2016; five in 2020 and three this year.

"From September to December, there is drier weather across the state, increased winds and continued major fire activity over the next three months," said Cal Fire chief Tom Porter.
