Two more cities have been evacuated and soldiers deployed as wildfires continue on the Spanish Costa del Sol.

The fight is complicated by "difficult terrain and aggressive fire", officials said.

One rescue worker has died since a fire broke out in the mountainous area above the popular tourist resort of Estepona on Wednesday.

Carmen Crespo, head of the regional environmental department, said the fire, fanned by strong winds and high temperatures at the end of the summer, appears to have been started on purpose.

The military emergency unit will assist firefighters in the Sierra Bermeja area, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said.

“We will work in coordination and without rest in the fight against the fire that is devastating the province of Malaga,” he tweeted.

The Andalusian Regional Forest Fires Agency said 365 firefighters, supported by 41 aircraft and 25 vehicles, are trying to take control of the fire.

"Ground firefighters are working intensively in harsh conditions, trying to stop the advancing flames," they added.

In the cities of Jubrik, where about 500 people live, and Genalguasil, where about 400 people live, a "preventive evacuation" was carried out.

"The evacuation is carried out with the utmost safety measures and against possible unfavorable development of a fire in the area," the Andalusian government said.
