The coach of the Bulgarian football team was fatally struck by lightning during the match.

State news agency BTA reported that the fatal incident occurred Sunday during a friendly game between the teams of Lessikhovo and Chernogorov, two villages in central Bulgaria.

Ivan Ranchev, the 41-year-old coach of the visiting team, was killed on the spot by lightning when a severe thunderstorm struck the village shortly after the start of the game.

An ambulance was immediately dispatched, but the doctors could only state his death.

Several more players were knocked down by the shockwave, but not seriously injured, the report said.

Mayor of the city of Lessikhovo Dimitar Vrinchev told local media that the football match began at 18:30, and soon after that "it started raining and literally suddenly the sky lit up."

"Thunder rang out and lightning struck the field," Vrinchev told local media outlets.
