Heavy rains continued in China over the weekend of August 28-29, 2021, including in the northwestern province of Shaanxi, where they caused massive flooding and landslides.
More than 23,000 people had to be evacuated to safety, and in parts of the large Chongqing municipality in southwestern China, water levels were reported to rise at a rate of 30-40 cm (12-15 inches) per hour.
In Hechuan Municipal District, a regional highway was flooded, and Chengkou County had the highest peak water flow in the Ren River in 20 years. Local authorities stepped up flood control measures at the highest level on 29 August.
