A short period of intense rainfall at the end of 19 August 2021 caused severe flooding and landslides in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, where one person died and another went missing.

The state civil defense service reported 80 floods and 9 landslides in the state capital, Chihuahua, and surrounding areas during the evening and night of August 19. Twenty-nine roads have been closed due to flooding in the vicinity of the city.

The flood also affected the city of Kuauchtemok, where about 30 houses were flooded.

Chihuahua Civil Defense received 164 calls for help and 73 rescue services were provided. Officials said one person died in the flood waters and another is reported missing.

About 60 mm of precipitation fell in 3 hours from 20:00. The Chuviskar River overflowed, tearing down bridges and roads in areas east of the city.

Two houses collapsed in the Obrera area and a bridge was partially destroyed in the Melchor Ocampo area, Chihuahua municipality said.
