Firefighters managed to take control of a huge fire that erupted Monday evening near the village of Kalimash in Albania and threatened the main road to neighboring Kosovo.

Fire engulfed the area above the Tyrre-Kalimash tunnel, burning trees and bushes.

No one was hurt, and traffic was resumed several hours later.

In North Macedonia, dozens of wildfires started after a heatwave, when the air temperature was the highest in decades.

On Tuesday, firefighters fought a fire in the village of Saray, on the outskirts of the capital Skopje.

Thousands of acres of pine, beech and oak forests have been destroyed in the past few days, and authorities said five people were arrested on suspicion of arson.
