Stormy weather with heavy rains since the beginning of August has resulted in devastation and flooding in 4 departments of El Salvador.
Storms, strong winds and torrential rains hit El Salvador from 02 August 2021. Floods damaged many houses in the southern areas of the city of San Salvador and several more in the Chanmico canton of the municipality of San Juan Opico, La Libertad department, according to the Civil Defense.
Further heavy rain on 06 August caused massive flash floods in the city of San Miguel and the surrounding areas of the department of San Miguel. Firefighters rescued people from cars caught in flood water. There were no reports of casualties. El Salvador's Ministry of the Environment said more than 60 mm of rain fell in the city of San Miguel in the 24 hours before August 7.
On 7 August, Civil Protection reported 17 families affected by flooding in the municipality of San Julian in the Sonsonate department. Also affected are areas in the municipality of São Vicente in the department of São Vicente.
On August 7, rescuers monitored the state of the river, which threatened to overflow in the Colonia Malaga in San Salvador.
