Taranjit Singh: A Case in which Science Confirms Belief in Reincarnation
Is rebirth possible? Is there a scientific basis for believing in rebirth? Since time immemorial, man has tried to find a solution to this riddle, but convincing evidence has still eluded him.
Now, probably in the first of its kind, a Patiala forensic expert has attempted to scientifically prove this phenomenon.
Having put up for discussion his research on the case of the revival of a child who in a past life lived in the village of Chakkchela, Jalandhar region, and now lives in the village of Alluna Miana, Ludhiana district, Vikram Raj Singh Chauhan argues that based on a comparison of the child's handwriting in his previous and current births he proves the theory of the possibility of rebirth.
His findings were highly praised at the recent National Conference of Forensic Experts at Bundelkhand University, Jhansi.
Back in 2002, a six-year-old boy, Taranjit Singh, from the village of Alluna Miana near Payal in Ludhiana, claimed to remember his previous life. In fact, according to his poor parents, the boy claimed this from the age of two and tried to run away from home.
The boy said that in the past he was born in the village of Chakkchela in the Jalandhar region, his real name was Satnam Singh, and his father's name was Jeet Singh.
According to him, at the time of his death, he was a 9th grade student at a school in the village of Nihalwal. On September 10, 1992, he was cycling home from school with his friend Sukwinder Singh when a scooter named Joga Singh from the village of Mirajwala, Tehsil Shahkot, knocked him down.
He suffered serious head injuries and died the next day.
His current father, Ranjit Singh, said that as the boy became more assertive, he and his wife took him to Chakkchela village in the Sangrur region. They could not find anyone similar to the people whom the son named his parents. When someone told them that there is also a Chakkchela village in the Jalandhar district, they decided to go there.
The boy's father, Ranjit Singh, and his friend Rajinder Singh went to a public school in Nihalwal village in the Jalandhar region, where they met an old teacher who said it was true that a boy named Satnam Singh died in an accident and was the son of Jeet Singh from Chakkchela village. Then the family got to Jeet Singh's house and told the whole story.
Ranjit Singh also said that his son claimed that the books he carried when the accident occurred were soaked in his blood. He also had 30 rupees in his wallet.
Upon hearing this, the woman who, according to Taranjit, was his mother in a previous birth, began to cry and confirmed his words. She said she kept the bloody books and 30 rupees as a last memory of her child.

Taranjit Singh with his parents in his current birth, 2002
A few days later, Taranjit Singh's brother in a past life Kewal Singh, sister Lakhbir Kaur, Bout Singh's friend, father Jeet Singh and mother Mohinder Kaur came to the village of Alluna Miana to meet with Taranjit.
Lahbir Kaur showed Taranjit Singh the photographs and asked him to recognize himself in his previous birth. Taranjit Singh immediately recognized himself as well as a photograph of his parents in a previous birth.
This story was published in several newspapers. Vikram Chauhan said that being a man of science, he refused to believe such a story, but, driven by curiosity, decided to investigate.
He visited the respective villages several times. The boy and the parents of both genera repeated the same story. He spoke to the owner of the shop, who told him that a few days before his death, the boy borrowed from him a notebook for 3 rupees.
When the shopkeeper went to the boy's village, he immediately recognized him, but said that he owed him only 2 rupees. The owner of the store admitted this fact and said that he only wanted to verify the authenticity of the child's statement.
After that, for scientific confirmation of the incident, Chauhan took samples of Taranjit Singh's handwriting in Gurmukhi and English, as well as Satnam Singh from notebooks kept in the Satnam Singh family to find out if the handwritings of Satnam Singh and Taranjit Singh were similar.
The investigation was based on the basic theory of forensic science, according to which the handwriting of two different people cannot be the same. If Taranjit Singh and Satnam Singh were the same person, then their handwriting must also be the same.
The author explained that a person's handwriting has specific characteristics that are determined by his personality, and therefore no two people write in the same way.
It is an applied science that combines the study of optics, physiology and psychology. The psychological makeup of a person is largely determined by his handwriting.
Thus, the mind plays an important role in the formation of a person's handwriting, and the hand only embodies the dictates of the mind, which cannot be the same for two different writers.
According to the author, he was amazed to find that Taranjit Singh's handwriting was almost identical to that of Satnam Singh. The only difference was the muscle coordination of the two writers, as Taranjit Singh was not used to writing. This was rather unusual and suggested that there was something the same about the two boys.
The author argued that if it is assumed that the soul passes from one person to another, then it can be concluded that the mind will remain the same. Thus, if it is believed that the soul of Satnam Singh was transferred into the body of Taranjit Singh, then it is quite logical that Taranjit Singh's handwriting would correspond to that of Satnam Singh.
The scientist proved this at a conference. According to the conference minutes, several forensic experts examined the handwriting samples and found that they were similar.
"I have some scientific reason to believe that rebirth is possible," says Chauhan, "but I want to continue research on this topic and am closely following the development of the child."
Another factor bolstered his findings, Chauhan said. "In his current birth, Taranjit never went to school because he belongs to a poor family, but when I asked him to write the English and Punjabi alphabets, he wrote them correctly."
In 2002, Taranjit lived with the parents of his current family, as they refused to give him to his former parents. His previous parents do not insist on their own, saying that they understand the feelings of his new parents.
