New microbial and viral threats continue to threaten the world. The risks are due to the growing population and the expansion of tourist flows. This was stated by the head of the Russian office of the World Health Organization (WHO) Melita Vujnovich.

“Global trends indicate that new microbial and viral threats will continue to appear at an accelerating rate due to the growing population, expansion of tourist and trade flows, human invasion of wildlife and habitats,” the expert quotes the “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”.

She clarified that most of the new viruses are zoonotic in nature, that is, they are transmitted between animals and humans. Vujnovic believes that now it is extremely important to timely identify new viruses and promptly share information between countries.

Earlier, WHO named an unexpected reason for the spread of coronavirus. This is the wildlife trade. The conclusions were made by experts who were part of an international group of WHO experts and conducted joint research with Chinese experts. One member of the group, zoologist Peter Dashak, said there may be animals susceptible to coronavirus at the Huangan food market in Wuhan.
