Forecasters in Chita for the first time in the entire observation period recorded snowfall simultaneously with a thunderstorm, reported on Thursday on the website of the Trans-Baikal Directorate for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.

"For the first time in the entire observation period, a thunderstorm with heavy snow was recorded in Chita. A thunderstorm with snow is a rare meteorological phenomenon, uncharacteristic for the Trans-Baikal spring. Thunderstorms in Transbaikalia are observed in the summer, when cold air invades when the earth's surface warms up," the message says. …

As forecasters specified, the average daily air temperature, which in March exceeded the norm by 5-12 degrees, led to a rare natural phenomenon. "This contributed to the accumulation of temperature in the surface layer, and with the displacement of the cold front through Chita, there was a sharp increase in vertical currents, which in turn led to an increase in instability in the atmosphere, to heavy snow and thunderstorms," the message says.

This is not the first weather anomaly in Transbaikalia since the beginning of the year. In January, forecasters registered wind gusts of up to 15-20 m / s, uncharacteristic for the region at this time of the year, and in February, for the first time in the entire observation period, the emergence of a southern cyclone was recorded, which brought heavy rainfall.
