Heavy rains hit the Gard department in southern France, causing destruction and flooding in several cities, as well as disruption to transport. The roof partially collapsed in the Intermarche shopping center in the commune of Cassargue, LCI TV reported on Tuesday.

According to preliminary data, no one was injured as a result of the incident. At the same time, in the neighboring commune of Nimes, the wall of a restaurant in the Carrefour Nimes Etoile shopping center collapsed due to soil erosion. The publication Midi Libre, citing eyewitnesses, reports on the presence of victims, but their condition is not specified.

The prefecture of the Gard department, where these cities are located, also report flooding of a number of intercity highways. In the communes of Vergues and Nîmes, the railway stations have been closed due to flooding. Trains between the communes of Nîmes and Montpellier have been temporarily stopped.

Earlier, the Meteorological Service "Meteo France" announced the maximum (red) and orange levels of weather danger due to thunderstorms in seven departments in the south of France. The red level is announced in the Gard department. The orange level concerns the departments of Aveyron, Haute-Garonne, Lot, Tarn-y-Garonne, Tarn and Herault. Thunderstorms in these areas are expected to be accompanied by strong gusts and hail.
