The flooding occurred in the Kamdesh area (also Kamdesh or Kamdish) in Nuristan province. As of July 29, Afghan television network Ariana News reported at least 60 deaths.

Roads and telecommunications systems were damaged. Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) said rescue and relief operations were difficult due to the affected area's remoteness. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the area is not controlled by the government.

Journalist Bilal Sarwari shared a video recording and a translated text of an appeal by the chief engineer of the Nuristan Provincial Council, urging "the government and humanitarian organizations to provide urgent assistance to the people."

The official confirmed massive damage and a large number of casualties. He said heavy rains caused flash floods in the village of Miardish in the Kamdish region, destroying 200 houses. The villagers recovered 40 bodies, but people are still missing and the death toll could exceed 200.
