The aircraft AN-26 "Avialesokhrana" developed in Soviet times, which is capable of causing rain, has proven itself to be excellent in extinguishing forest fires in Yakutia, the head of the republic, Aisen Nikolaev, said.

"In these conditions (large-scale fires - IF) the AN-26 Avialesoohrana aircraft proved to be extremely successful in causing rains. It worked very well. In many areas, in the most difficult moments, when at least some cloudiness appeared, we managed to cause rain that did not put out the fires, but brought them down. And some kind of respite arose for their localization, "Nikolayev said in an interview published on Tuesday in the Kommersant newspaper.

According to him, "there were very large fires in the group of districts across the river, and there were very good rains, it was successful."

"They (the rains caused by the AN-26 aircraft - IF) allowed the fires to be completely shot down. Unfortunately, this aircraft is the only one in the country. (…) The forest guard has one in the country. And now he has been working here all summer," the head of Yakutia explained …

He specified that the plane "was developed in the 1980s to deal with the consequences of drought."

"As experts say, in the mid-80s, Yakutia burned much stronger than now. And then there was a terrible drought. To cause rains, not only for extinguishing fires, but also for agriculture, this plane was developed. Then everything fell apart, but, thank God, one such aircraft remained and is now actively used. The operating one is still one, but there are, they say, several of those that can be improved, "Nikolayev said in an interview with the publication.
