At least 19 people have died in the local administrative district of Doguwa in Kano State after flooding washed away the bus carrying them over the weekend.

The incident followed a torrential rain in the city that lasted several hours and destroyed property valued at more than Nato 100 million.

"People and pets, including birds, as well as food were destroyed as several houses were flooded," said resident Saidu.

The headman of the village of Doguva, Alhaji Yusuf Umar, confirmed the incident to reporters, saying that 15 bodies had been found, and the search for the remaining four victims had been intensified.

Umar said that the car carrying the dead was washed away by the flood after its engine stalled in the middle of the bridge.

He added that the bridge was flooded after heavy rainfall.

"The car's engine stalled, the car stopped abruptly, and before the driver could start it, a stream of water washed away the car along with the passengers."

“We have not found a single survivor yet. We are still looking for bodies,” Umar said.

State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) spokesman Ali Abdullahi Garko also confirmed the incident as regrettable.

He said the state government sent a delegation led by SEMA Executive Secretary Saleh Jili to express condolences to the families of the victims.
