Nine tourists were killed and several were injured after a massive landslide brought down a bridge in the Sangla Valley in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.

The horrifying video footage shows large chunks of rocks breaking off the mountain and rolling down into the valley. The video shows a section of the bridge collapsing and falling into the river after being hit by a boulder.

“All 11 casualties are tourists whose cars were hit by boulders,” said Saju Ram Rana, chief of police in Kinnaura, adding that the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

A team of doctors is working on the spot, he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Jairam Thakur expressed regret over the loss of life as a result of the accident.

“It is very sad that a vehicle carrying tourists was hit, as a result of which nine people were killed and two were injured, and one bystander was injured. May God grant peace to the souls of the victims and strength to the families of the victims,” Mr. Thakur tweeted in hindi.

"At present, all measures are being taken to treat the victims of the accident. I wish them a speedy recovery," reads a tweet from the Prime Minister's office.

Prime Minister Modi also announced aid of 2 lakhs for the families of those killed in the accident and 50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

The Meteorological Office recently issued a landslide warning in the state of Himachal Pradesh due to heavy rainfall forecast in the next few days. Landslides have become commonplace in this mountainous state over the past few years.
