Two international airports in the Chinese city of Shanghai canceled all flights and authorities banned outdoor events as Typhoon Ying Fa hit eastern China with high winds and heavy rains.

Ying-Fa reached the Putuo District of Zhoushan City, a major port in eastern Zhejiang Province, at 12:30 (04:30 GMT) on Sunday, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing the China Meteorological Bureau.

The storm hit central China, which is still experiencing record floods that have killed at least 58 people, cut electricity and displaced more than 1 million people.

"We will make every effort to ensure the safety of life and property of people, we will do everything to minimize losses from the natural disaster, and we will strive to achieve the goal of no fatalities, no injuries and economic damage," said Yuan Jiajun, secretary of the provincial Communist Party Zhejiang, during the inspection of the preparatory activities on Saturday, official media reported.
