Heavy rains in central India since Wednesday 21 July 2021 have overflowed rivers in parts of Maharashtra, causing severe flooding. Severe floods also affected neighboring Telangana state, where more than 1,000 people were evacuated.

One of the most affected areas of Maharashtra is the Ratnagiri area, especially the city of Chiplun (population ~ 25,000), where the Vashisti River overflowed its banks on 22 July, releasing huge amounts of water into residential areas. Many market squares, residential and commercial complexes were under water.

Power lines and communications have been cut, bridges in and around Chiplun are underwater and it has been difficult to reach local residents, officials say. The public transport bus parking was completely flooded, and all parked buses were submerged.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Coast Guard teams arrived in the city in the afternoon.
