At least seven people have died of an as-yet-to-be-identified illness in the New Crafts Market, Enugu, and eight others are in critical condition.

The chairman of the livestock market, Alhaji Dunlady Abubarkar, who spoke to reporters yesterday, said the death occurred early in the morning. Abubarkar said market residents woke up and found the bodies of the dead, including four men and three women.

He said that all the victims, including tricycle drivers, artisans and other people from different families, had stools and vomit. "As we speak, the bodies are still in their rooms. Soon we will go to the cemetery to bury the Muslims, and the Christians will be taken away by their relatives," he said.

Enugu State Health officials have already visited the area to investigate the cause of death. The team leader, who asked to remain anonymous, described the situation as alarming, saying that all the victims were not connected in any way.

The source said there could be an outbreak in the area, adding that doctors at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital had been alerted. He ordered that those in critical condition be immediately taken to hospital, and eight people were immediately transported to their place on a bus marked "Olamaboro Local Government Council".

Dr. George Ugwu, Executive Secretary of the Enugu Primary Health Care Development Agency, said it was premature to speak on the matter as no one was sure of the cause of death. Ugwu, however, said a group of health experts had been dispatched to the site for more information.
