The new "Delta" strain (Indian strain) has caused an increase in COVID-19 cases in the world. This was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO).

"The Delta option is one of the main drivers of the current rise in infections, fueled by increased social interaction and movement of people," WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at an emergency meeting of the organization's COVID-19 assessment committee. He added that the Delta strain is present in more than a hundred countries around the world.

According to Gebreyesus, the world is now on the verge of the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. His statement is posted on WHO's Twitter.

“Last week was the fourth consecutive week that the rate of COVID-19 infections increased globally, with more cases in all but one of the WHO regions,” Gebreyesus continued. He added that the death rate for causes related to covid is also on the rise.

According to Worldmeters, the total number of coronavirus cases in the world since the start of the pandemic is nearly 188.9 million. The number of deaths in the world has exceeded 4.09 million, and the number of those who recovered amounted to almost 172.6 million. The three leaders in terms of incidence are the United States, India and Brazil. Russia is in fourth place.
