Insects destroyed 240 cubic meters of the Kostroma forest. This damage was caused by longhorn beetles only in one Galich region. A batch of contaminated wood - more than one and a half thousand logs - was identified by Rosselkhoznadzor specialists at the stage of preparation for shipment.

The larvae of a black spruce barbel were found in the trees. The offspring bites into a tree, sharpens it from the inside for two years. If such a trunk is sent for export, it can become a carrier of stem nematosis and cause massive death of trees.

Pheromone traps help to monitor the situation. The Rosselkhoznadzor has installed them in 24 municipalities of the region since 2019 at the beginning of summer, when the beetles have not yet entered the adult stage.

“To say that this population has been eliminated or not, two years, of course, is not enough. That is, monitoring will be carried out this year, next and in subsequent years. the decision was made to abolish the sanitary-quarantine zones. Such pests are detected where there is direct logging. Therefore, we oblige all loggers and forest users to carry out sanitary felling. This must be done during the period of mass reproduction. And what is especially important in hot weather - to process the stored wood with insecticidal preparations ", - said Alexander Zhumaev, deputy head of the Rosselkhoznadzor Directorate for the Kostroma, Vladimir and Ivanovo regions.
