Pregnant women become infected with the new coronavirus infection three times more often than people in the general population. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the Kemerovo State Medical University and the Chita State Medical Academy based on the results of a study of the course of the disease in pregnant women living in Siberia and the Far East, since the beginning of the pandemic.

"The incidence of the population of the Siberian Federal District and the Far Eastern Federal District in 2020 amounted to 1,960 (cases) per 100 thousand people, while the incidence in pregnant women is three times higher than this indicator - 5,933 [cases] per 100 thousand people," the head of the department told TASS obstetrics and gynecology of the Kemerovo University, chief freelance specialist of the Ministry of Health of Russia on obstetrics and gynecology in the Siberian Federal District Natalya Artymuk, According to the study, 80% of pregnant women who fell ill had a mild and asymptomatic course of the disease. Mortality among pregnant women was 505 cases per 100 thousand people, or 0, 14%. It is also noted that sick women in labor were more often treated in intensive care and anesthesiological departments (3.5%) than the general population (2.2%), but much less often mechanical ventilation devices were used for their treatment.

Also, pregnant women with coronavirus three times more often than non-infected women had premature birth, and in their case, almost one and a half times more often had to resort to caesarean section. Artymuk noted that pregnancy in general complicates various diseases, and in this situation, the only way to get rid of the negative consequences of coronavirus is vaccination. She recalled that pregnancy is not a contraindication for the Sputnik V vaccine.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, about 185.6 million people have been infected with the coronavirus in the world, more than 4 million have died. In Russia, according to the federal operational headquarters for the fight against coronavirus, 5,733,218 cases of infection were registered, 5,165,087 people recovered, 141,501 died. The Russian government launched the stopcoronavirus.ru resource to inform about the situation in the country.
