Flooding in Edinburgh caused chaos, and trains to and from the city were stopped during devastating stormy weather.

Photos on social media show the many streets of the Scottish capital bathed in rain, water seeping into homes, bars, businesses and seemingly seeping into a new shopping center.

Emergency services have been involved in several incidents, including under one of the bridges in Chesse where Scottish Fire and Rescue personnel could be seen helping vehicles stuck in floods.

Dr. Eoin Plant-O'Toole photographed a couple stuck at a bus stop on Roseburn Terrace, where he said a "river" had formed.

SEPA issued a warning that heavy rainfall could trigger potentially dangerous flooding, stating: “Flood warning has been announced in Edinburgh and Lothians.

"Heavy rainfall on Saturday afternoon and Sunday can cause flooding from surface waters."

Stormy weather on Sunday also created problems for shoppers in the new St. James Quarter, which opened in Edinburgh just last month.

One Twitter user, Jamie Cunningham, pointed out "a couple of design flaws when it comes to rain."

The water could be seen running down the windows and onto the balconies of several floors down to ground level.

The Stockton area of Edinburgh has been described as effectively "underwater" after dramatic footage of cars submerged in the water was released.

A Stockbridge resident said, "My feed is full of Edinburgh residents who say they've never seen flooding like Stockbridge."

Another video shows water rushing into basement-level apartments as people are desperate to save their homes.

Even the Stockbridge Tap was closed due to flooding.

In their statement, they said: “Sorry friends, we were forced to close for the evening due to severe flooding in the basement. We will reopen on Tuesday as usual.

"Don't worry, the beer is safe and sound, I just wouldn't want to get the electrics wet!"

At around 5.46 pm, ScotRail tweeted that trains between Helensburg and Edinburgh would only run between the coastal city "and Bathgate" for safety reasons.

Bus services were organized from Edinburgh to Glasgow while Network Rail workers "installed the pumps that work and help the water level recede."

The railroad company said the track was cleared shortly after 8 p.m.
