Experts note that the streams of warm air allowed the bloodsuckers to reach the 19th floor, which had not been observed before.
As reported by the Interfax agency, due to the abnormal heat, the number of mosquitoes in the northern capital has increased even in comparison with the two previous ones. In an interview with the agency, Alexander Shapar, head of the department of epidemiology, parasitology and disinfectology of the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in St. Petersburg, noted that the increase in the number of blood-sucking insects is observed mainly in the peripheral areas of the city.
Scientists say that in strong winds, mosquitoes can travel up to five kilometers from local water bodies - their breeding grounds. Warm currents of rising air allow them to reach previously inaccessible areas. So, if earlier mosquitoes did not fly above the 10th floor of residential buildings, then during the recent heat wave they were noticed even at the level of the 19th floor!
Residents of St. Petersburg and the region are advised to install nets on the windows, use repellents more often and prevent basements from flooding, since they can become a real incubator, from which hundreds of insects will hatch very quickly.
