Thousands of families are affected by flooding caused by downpours in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. The rains were brought by the La Niña weather phenomenon, which has been observed since the end of last year. Because of this, the water in some parts of the Pacific Ocean became unusually cold.

For the region, the current floods are the worst in a century. They caused chaos in many localities. The city of Anaman, where 14 thousand people live, was badly damaged. The Solimoes River flows through it, downstream is the state capital, Manaus.

[Etzi Marke, lifeguard]:

“A state of emergency has already been declared in Anaman. It is introduced when 100% of the city is flooded, the situation becomes more complicated. We distribute help in the form of basic food and firewood to all residents."

Residential buildings are flooded. Residents move around the city by boats.

[Anaman resident]:

“You see the situation in which my home is. It is half flooded. I have nowhere to move things. I'm trying to save something, I can't stand it."

[resident of Anaman]:

“If the water level rises higher, I’m even afraid to think about it. Then the situation will become very difficult. This house already stands at a height of 2.5 meters, and look where the water is. She rose almost 3 meters."

In total, 350 thousand people were affected by floods in the Amazon.
