Permafrost is melting faster than scientists thought. The situation is aggravated by global warming. The snowy winter and early spring of 2020 led to the fact that the depth of permafrost thawing was the maximum in the past few years. This is the conclusion reached by experts from Yekaterinburg, reports cheltv.ru.

"The depth of seasonal thawing is increasing. Unevenly - one year less, another - more, but the overall trend is visible," said Vyacheslav Zakharov, head of the laboratory of physics of climate and environment at the Ural Federal University.

New data on the active permafrost layer were collected in South Yamal. In rocks dominated by sand, the level of freezing is reduced, in some cases to a critical ten centimeters, the researchers note. It is important to monitor the situation and understand the scenarios of possible development of events for several reasons. The melting of glaciers can provoke the release of carbon and methane into the atmosphere and damage the existing infrastructure, as well as affect the evolution of the climate not only in Russia, but throughout the entire globe.
