Prolonged heavy rains over the past 2 weeks have killed six people in Madagascar, Floodlist reports.
Heavy rain caused flash floods and landslides in parts of Antananarivo on 8 January. The country's natural disaster management agency (BNGRC) has reported the destruction. According to the BNGRC, 4 people died and more than 40 homes were damaged or destroyed, resulting in 136 people being displaced and nearly 400 injured.
During the same period, the media reported that 2 people were washed away by flood waters in Districh d'Andapa. About 60 people were rescued from the flood. Also, from 7 to 8 January, flooding was recorded in the port city of Mahajanga. 1,515 people were evacuated and placed in various shelters.
In various parts of Madagascar, heavy rains have intensified again since January 20, causing the water level in the rivers to rise. Local mass media report about flooding of a number of settlements.
