A volcano near the cultural capital of Indonesia, Yogyakarta on the island of Java, has already spewed lava nearly two dozen times in the past two days and has caused hundreds of small volcanic earthquakes, according to a report from the Indonesian Geological Agency.

“Lava avalanches have been observed seven times this morning,” the agency said, with lava moving 700 meters to the southwest.

However, the official warning about the volcano's status remained unchanged at the second-highest level, where it has remained since November last year.

Locals were ordered to avoid the area within a radius of five kilometers from the crater, and were also warned of lava as well as airborne volcanic material.

The last major eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced the evacuation of some 280,000 residents from nearby areas.

It was its most powerful eruption since 1930, when about 1,300 people died, and another explosion in 1994 killed about 60 people.

There are about 130 active volcanoes on the territory of the Southeast Asian archipelago.
