Dust and sand from the Sahara covered the eastern part of Spain, the state meteorological agency (Aemet) previously warned that this natural phenomenon will especially affect Murcia, Valencia, and the Baleares.

The Murcia sky turned pink and yellow, and the Murcia and Lorca City Halls have activated protocols due to increased air pollution. Despite heavy rain expected in the evening, pollution levels will not subside until Monday, Murcia Radio Onda Regional reported. The authorities recommend staying outside for too long, exercising outdoors, and avoiding driving into the city center.

Lorca's authorities recommend not setting controlled fires for agricultural purposes, reducing electricity use in homes, using public transport, leaving private cars outside the city center, and not playing sports on the street.

Judging by the photographs posted on social networks, the "yellow fog" covered the Balears and Valencia. In addition, meteorologists do not exclude that the dust may reach Aragon and Castile-la-Mancha.

Earlier this week, "dust fog" from Africa covered the Canary Islands, and a number of flights were canceled.

The natural phenomenon "kalima" (suspension of dust and sand in the air) regularly occurs in the Canary Islands, but rarely reaches the mainland of Spain and the Balearic Islands.
