Southern New England was hit by the region's worst earthquake in decades. The tremor shook the houses, but did not cause significant damage.

New England is a region in the northeastern United States that includes the states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

A magnitude 3.6 earthquake hit the area at 9 a.m. Sunday morning in Buzzards Bay, off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Earthquake Information Center.

The quake was felt in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and even Long Island, New York.

It was the strongest earthquake since 1976, when a magnitude 3.5 earthquake was recorded.

Ali Kenner Brodsky, who lives in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, near the epicenter of the quake, said she was sitting in her kitchen talking to her son when the quake struck.

“It was a crash. It sounded like something exploded. Everything rumbled around. The whole house shook,”she said.

Ms Brodskaya said that the earthquake lasted from 10 to 15 seconds, and added: "At that moment it seemed to me that it would last forever."

Chris Besse, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, said they had not received any reports of significant damage, although there were reports of minor incidents.

Fall River police tweeted about the earthquake and said they received several phone calls from local residents reporting that street signs were uprooted as a result of the incident.
