Strong winds of up to 85 km / h and torrential rains brought on by tropical storm Laura caused severe damage to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with at least 11 fatalities.
In some areas of the Dominican Republic, almost 300 mm of precipitation was recorded in 24 hours. Several rivers overflowed their banks. Some of the worst floods have been reported in the provinces of Santo Domingo and the National District (Greater Santo Domingo).
Four deaths were reported as a result of flooding or wind damage. About 1,000 people fled their homes. The supply of electricity and fresh water to more than 100 thousand people was interrupted.
In neighboring Haiti, authorities reported 5 deaths in the departments of Sud-Est and West. Two more deaths were reported later.
Previously, the hurricane brought strong winds and heavy rains to parts of Puerto Rico, causing power outages for about 200,000 homes and businesses.
