Heavy rain continues to wreak havoc in southwestern China's Sichuan province, with tens of thousands of residents evacuated, homes damaged and roads flooded.

Heavy rain starting Monday evening in the province left six people dead and five missing, and as of Wednesday afternoon, more than 40,000 residents were forced to evacuate, according to the provincial flood and drought headquarters.

It says that about 107,000 people were affected by rain throughout the province, 14 rivers overflowed.

Heavy rains caused mudflows in parts of Sichuan, damaging houses and roads. Traffic on the national highway was interrupted by landslides in Shimian County, Ya'an City.

Local authorities have advised tourist sites and rural family hotels to suspend operations in five major cities and prefectures in Sichuan.

This period of downpours was the worst since the beginning of the flood season in Sichuan this year. In the province, 49 emergency relief teams were coordinated to assist in disaster relief efforts.

Sichuan province announced extreme flooding on Tuesday evening as rainstorms continued to hit the province.
