Perthians witnessed an amazing spectacle of 22,000 lightning strikes off the coast, while those in the Southwest watched 313,000 lightning strikes.

Steve Yanev saw an impending storm and, wasting no time, grabbed his camera and headed towards the coast.

The Perth photographer and avid thunderstorm hunter viewed Scarborough's car park as the best vantage point and were not disappointed.

"There were a lot of lightning strikes, but it took an hour to catch this gorgeous shot," he said.

"I especially like lightning striking through clouds, while others seemingly being cut in half by pieces of clouds. Beautiful and powerful power of nature."

The end result was a photograph that Ian chose to call "magnificent nature at its best" - a vista of a dark sky over a seething ocean, ominously illuminated by arcs of lightning descending from the clouds as the Scarborough shore looms in the foreground.
