About 70 homes were damaged and 12 people were injured after a violent tornado struck seaside villages in Kendrapara district in Odisha, India, Monday afternoon, June 15, 2020.

The storm hit around 10:30 UTC (16:00 LT) and lasted for about 10 minutes.

Affected villages included Rangani, Patparia, Bahamari, Garata, Ahirajpur, Keruapala, Saylendrasaray, Khatiaganda, Pravati, Kantiakhai and Hamarasahi.

"The tornado hit Rangani, scattering pieces of about 12 thatched roofs and wounding eight people. Most of the residents who were injured were simply hit and bruised," said Rangani village head Rasmireha Daley.

Among the victims were four children who suffered from flying roof tiles and metal sheets in Khamarashah.

Ramesh Mandal, also one of the victims, said the tornado overturned the fishing boats. - A tornado knocked four fishing boats upside down at Talachua pier. As a result, three fishermen were injured."

Many families were left homeless as their roofs were torn down. In addition, numerous wooden huts in the villages were damaged. Trees uprooted caused road disruptions and severely damaged electricity supplies.

The government has yet to confirm the actual extent of the loss and damage. No casualties were reported.
