Experts have warned authorities of a possible massive earthquake in the Delhi metropolitan area after several earthquakes have been recorded in the area, raising concerns about an imminent devastating cataclysm.

On Wednesday, a magnitude 3.32 on the Richter scale struck areas of Delhi and Noida, a day after numerous geologists alerted authorities to major seismic activity in the country's metropolitan area.

The quake hit about 19 kilometers southeast of Noida on June 3, raising the total number of quakes that hit the area five days to three.

Noida is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, part of the Delhi metropolitan area.

The seismically active zone has been affected by ten weak and moderate tremors in the last month and a half. On May 29, Delhi, Noida, Guragram, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh were hit by moderate earthquakes, focusing on the residential area of Pitampur.

Delhi is the national metropolitan area of India and an agglomeration in the north of the country. In the area of Old Delhi of the 17th century, stands the symbol of India - the majestic Red Fort of the Mughal era. Not far from it is the Cathedral Mosque, which can accommodate 25,000 parishioners.

Delhi is located above a seismically active risk zone, with some geologists predicting that the area could be hit by an earthquake of magnitude 6 on the Richter scale.

In addition, experts also warned that most of the buildings in the region do not comply with building guidelines developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and are at high risk of collapse in the event of a major earthquake.

Dr. Kalachand Sain, head of the Wadia Institute of Geology, said: “We cannot predict the time, location or exact magnitude, but we see that there is constant seismic activity in the region and this could trigger a major earthquake in Delhi.”
