The first month of 2020 in Central Russia turned out to be the warmest in the history of meteorological observations. It is almost 1.5 ° higher than the previous record set in January 2007.

For the second time in history, the average temperature of the coldest month of winter was above 0 °. January 2020 is warmer than December 2019. On the European territory of Russia, the average monthly air temperature anomalies were + 4 … 10 ° and more. They are even more in the Asian territory (+ 8 … 12 °). Only in the extreme north-east of the country was it colder than usual (up to -1 °). As a result of such a temperature background, on average for a month, it turned out that the past January is the second warmest in the history of meteorological observations and is inferior in this indicator only to January 2007.

The warmest became this January and in the entire Northern Hemisphere of the Earth, exceeding the record of 2016. Abnormally warm weather persisted on both the Eurasian and North American continents. In Western Europe, last January is the second warmest in the history of meteorological observations, and in the United States and China, it is among the top ten warmest.

At the same time, there are regions where it was colder than usual. These are Alaska and the northern regions of Canada, as well as vast territories in northern Africa and India.
