A powerful, slow moving storm continues to affect parts of California, with significant mountain snow, heavy rain and gusty winds. In Santa Barbara County, up to 127 mm of precipitation fell, which led to localized flooding. The city of Santa Barbara recorded a record 28.4 mm rainfall, while Monterey received 30.7 mm, higher than its average monthly rainfall. Showers and thunderstorms are also forecast in the Midwest in the coming days.

An exceptionally deep cyclone is expected to linger in Southern California during the first half of the week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Nearly 60cm of snow fell in the Sierra Nevada, with more expected during the week. Heavy snowfall continues to affect the San Gabriel and San Bernardo ridges as well.

It also rains heavily along the coastal ridge and river valleys. There is a high risk of flash floods in some areas.

The Meteorological Office has warned of a significant risk of excessive rainfall for parts of Southern California, as the heaviest rainfall looms south towards San Diego.

The Great Basin / Mezhgorny West may also experience precipitation as the frontal system gradually moves inland on Tuesday 7 April, and the Wind River Mountains also predict snowfall in the same period.

Windy conditions and colder temperatures are predicted for California in parts of the Southwest.

Severe weather is also expected to hit the Midwest over the next few days. Areas from the southern plains and the Midwest to the east coast can see showers and thunderstorms.

By Wednesday, the severe weather threat will have shifted towards Midsout.
